Nelson Bore wins Google PhD Fellowship!

Oct. 30, 2025

Congratulations to PhD candidate Nelson Bore (Balmau Lab)! He has been awarded a prestigious Google PhD Fellowship (2025 cohort). The Fellowship provides not only substantial financial support but also mentorship and access to the research ecosystem within Google, helping propel research impact and industry collaboration. Nelson’s doctoral research focuses on vector databases and high-performance data-management pipelines. He is developing efficient workflows that leverage vector databases for accelerated fuzzy deduplication, and advancing algorithmic optimizations within the vector-index itself: improving distance-metric computations, streamlining the updates path, and analyzing performance on GPU architectures. Prior to this, Nelson worked on efficient stream-processing for edge-computing. His work (Falcon) was recognized with a Best Paper Award at the ACM/IEEE Symposium on Edge Computing (SEC), the flagship conference for edge computing. We congratulate Nelson and hope this well-deserved award will enable him to deepen this work, broaden his collaborations, and make McGill even more visible in systems research.
