Funded PhD Position in Agentic Artificial Intelligence for Hydrology

Expected start: Summer 2027

A funded PhD position is available at Université du Québec à Chicoutimi for a research project involving the development of agentic artificial intelligence systems for hydrological modeling and water sciences.

The position is primarily intended for candidates with a strong background in artificial intelligence, computer science, or a related field. Previous experience in hydrology is an asset but is not required.

Candidate Profile

Applicants must:

  • Hold a master’s degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, computer engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field, or be able to provide official proof of degree completion by October 30, 2026.
  • Have a cumulative average above 3.0/4.3, or its equivalent, across their undergraduate and graduate studies.
  • Meet the admission requirements of UQAC’s PhD program in Engineering.
  • Demonstrate excellent Python programming skills and strong knowledge of machine learning.

Experience in several of the following areas is particularly desirable:

  • Design and orchestration of AI agents or multi-agent systems.
  • Agent frameworks such as LangGraph, LangChain, AutoGen, or CrewAI.
  • Tool integration, function calling, tool calling, or Model Context Protocol.
  • Large language models, RAG, embeddings, and vector databases.
  • Model deployment using Ollama, vLLM, or Hugging Face.
  • Model adaptation through LoRA, QLoRA, or related approaches.
  • Evaluation, reliability, and reproducibility of AI-based systems.

Applicants should demonstrate scientific rigor, reliability, openness to feedback, and strong communication skills.

The ability to work in French is a strong asset. English-speaking candidates will also be considered.

Conditions

  • Full-time, on-site PhD position in Saguenay, Québec, Canada.
  • Expected start in Summer 2027.
  • Funding available; amount, duration, and conditions will be confirmed before admission.
