About
The Undergraduate Computer Science Research Symposium (UCORE) offers undergraduate students at McGill University who have been involved in summer research the opportunity to submit and present their research. This allows students to learn about the breadth of computer science research and share their accomplishments with a wider audience.
UCORE adopted a new format in 2019 which we will continue to follow this year, albeit online: a poster session featuring undergraduate research in the department around the time of the first SOCS colloquium. Researchers will display posters in a casual open setting using a Gather Town framework. They should prepare a short walk-through talk about the research and be ready to discuss with their peers, the rest of the department, and a program committee. The program committee will evaluate each poster presentation based on the visual quality and the verbal pitch and provide feedback to the student authors on their presentation.
We ask interested students to submit an abstract and title by August 31, 2021; received abstracts will be provided with feedback. This follows the model of the ACM student research competition and many other workshops in computer science.

Step 1: Submit a title and short extended abstract (not more than 600 words) by Aug 31.
The abstract has to be authored only by the undergraduate student(s) working on the project. If the work is collaborative with others and/or part of a larger group project, the abstract should make clear what was the contribution of the undergraduate student(s) and should focus on that portion of the work. The abstract must not exceed 600 words and must not be longer than 2 pages including references. - Step 3: Present your work at the symposium!
Important Dates:
- August 31, 2021: Submission deadline
- September 3, 2021: Notification and feedback for authors
- September 10, 2021: Symposium date! It will run on Gather.Town from 3:30pm-5:30pm
Submission details:
Each submission should include the student author's (authors') name(s), institutional affiliation, e-mail address, and research advisor's name in addition to the title and an extended abstract addressing the following:
- Problem and Motivation: Clearly state the problem being addressed and explain the reasons for seeking a solution to this problem.
- Background and Related Work: Describe the specialized (but pertinent) background necessary to appreciate the work. Include references to the literature where appropriate, and briefly explain where your work departs from that done by others.
- Approach and Uniqueness: Describe your approach in attacking the problem and clearly state how your approach is novel.
- Results and Contributions: Clearly show how the results of your work contribute to computer science and explain the significance of those results.
Submitted abstracts should be in PDF, formatted using the ACM SIGPLAN style guidelines. The abstract should not exceed 600 words (excluding references).
