President's Report 2013 / Rapport du président 2013
President's report, Oct 2013
We plan an exciting start to the GNS year on Nov 28 with a talk on the islands
of Lake Memphremagog by our very own Louise Abbott.
Last year's Bird Count was stimulated by John Hoblyn's and Angela Losito's
workshop the previous November on the science and procedures for the annual
Audubon Christmas Bird Count, followed by André Cyr's virtuoso presentation
on bird song and behaviour. Fifty participants (up from the record of 31 the
year before) spotted 1983 individual birds (another record), representing 39
species - all despite the extreme cold.
Come spring, 25 GNS walkers, led by Richard Morris, did less formal but also
rich bird spotting on the Tomifobia Trail. In addition we held our usual
winter family fun ski and summer outings including a solstice visit to the
Stanstead stone circle and a bike outing led by Michael Hayes back on the
Tomifobia Trail. Rain hampered some of the fun, especially July's kayak outing.
The highlight of the GNS year was, as always, the Barbara Clift Ski Day, dinner
and dance, thanks to Nancy Amos for the dinner and Lynda Nichol for the dance.
We are beginning to think of checking and clearing the trails, so please tell
Ed Markwell if you would like to help, especially once the hunting season is
over.
And we have one more nature walk on Oct 3: keep posted!
