Directions to Lake Placid

The best way to come to Lake Placid is to fly to the Burlington International Airport in Burlington, Vermont and to rent a car there for the drive to Lake Placid. You can also fly to the Albany, New York State Airport and to drive Lake Placid from the airport. Both drives are very scenic drives, but the drive from Burlington is more pleasant ( you take a ferry boat across Lake Champlain). Burlington is also a beautiful small city on the shores of Lake Champlain with lots of good restaurants. There are easy connections from any major city in the US to both Burlington and Albany. You can certainly drive from New York City (5 hours) or Boston (5 1/2 hours), but you can also encounter serious traffic getting out of either of these cities. You really want to avoid the exit traffic from either of these cities. If you are thinking of coming through Montreal (2 1/2 hours), there are rather long lines at the border in June, and you will definitely need a passport. I have modified the directions from Google Map to make life a bit easier. One last note-in the event that you arrive in Boston, there is a commuter airline which flies to an airport 20 miles from Lake Placid, the Adirondack Regional Airport in Lake Clear. The airline schedule is at capeair

There are two routes to Lake Placid, both of which involve taking a ferry across Lake Champlain. One ferry leaves from downtown Burlington, minutes from the airport and takes an hour to cross Lake Champlain. This is the Burlington-Port Kent ferry. If your plane arrives when this ferry is still running, it is a beautiful crossing, but check the ferry schedule first ferry schedule. Otherwise you can take the Grand Isle ferry, which operates on a 24 hour per day schedule and only takes 15 minutes to cross the lake. Both drives are a delight.
