Sorry. I'll send other stuff as soon as it's done (all the rest is in section 6, "SOCS Culture"). Nick is looking over the McConnell Geography section, so you should be getting a revised version from him. -Jacob ---------- 1.c McConnell geography [ Jacob (jacob), Nick (ncc) ] SOCS is housed in the McConnell Engineering Building. The following McConnell landmarks should be known to every computer science student. The departmental office is in room 318. This is where you can find information concerning courses or programs of study, or drop off a note in a professor's box. The 3rd floor is also where most of the professors' offices can be found. The main labs are at the north end of the 1st floor (one above the ground floor). Rooms 102N, 103N, and 105N contain about 70 Pentiums running the Linux operating system, while 106N contains 20 Pentiums running Microsoft Windows NT. The labs also contain a sprinkling of special-purpose machines (eg, SGI graphics workstations) and dumb terminals. All these machines are hooked up to the SOCS network. The labs are accessible to enrolled cs students 24 hours a day, for schoolwork and, when not too busy, recreational use. Eating, drinking, and smoking are forbidden, and the noise level should be kept low. These and other rules are posted on the walls of the labs in bold type. During weekdays a consultant is usually on duty handling questions in 104N. The system staff and the computing servers are on the second floor, directly above the labs. Setting up new accounts, paying for printouts, and other in-person questions should be directed to the help desk in 209N, which is manned during weekdays and often throughout the small hours. Questions to system staff can also be directed to help@cs.mcgill.ca, [URL], or [phone #]. NB: outside the help desk you will notice a door with a sign on it, saying, "This door swings open at random intervals. Do not sit, stand, study or sleep near it! You have been warned." Take a few seconds to burn these words of wisdom indelibly into your skull. Too many promising young students have already been lost. Non-cs attractions in McConnell include the cafeteria between the 1st and ground floors, with its steaming plates of poutine; Copi-EUS on the ground floor, for photocopies; and Frostbite, also on the ground floor, for seasonal ice cream. Men's bathrooms are located in rooms 120 and 339; women's, in 113, 115, and 209. (The "sign" on room 120 which appears to say "staff only" is not in fact a sign at all, but some disinformative graffiti.) Pay phones are available on the ground floor, in the cafeteria, and outside the labs. ---------- 1.d.vii Blackboards [ possibly Jacob (jacob) ] Blackboards are mounted in 102N, 105N and 106N and are public-writable. ---------- 6.g avoiding RSI [ possibly Jacob (jacob) ] Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is a general term for injuries resulting from repetitive activities like typing. Some RSIs, like carpal tunnel syndrome, can be incapacitating and incurable, so good typing habits are important - keep those keyboards low! Learn more at http://www.tifaq.com/mhirm.
