Limit Permutations

Suppose you have a large random permutation with some property, e.g., it inverts 1/3 of its pairs. What does it look like? To get a handle on this question, we exploit a variational principle for limit objects called "permutons." Result: lots of pretty pictures, some theorems, many open problems. Joint work with Rick Kenyon, Dan Kral and Charles Radin.
